The Reno County (Kansas) Old Order Amish settlement was organized as a congregation in 1883, when the families of Christian H. Miller, Christian C. Miller, Tobias Schrock, and Peter Schrock came from Shelby County, Illinois. The first ministers were Christian E. Bontrager, bishop, and John D. Nissley and Noah T. Schrock, ministers. The two districts, North Haven and East Haven, formed in 1899 and 1923 respectively, had a combined membership of 109 in 1957. A third district, West Haven, was discontinued in 1943. The Yoder Mennonite Church (Mennonite Church), founded in 1917, was organized largely by former members from the Amish congregations. -- D. Paul Miller

Partridge (pop. 221 in 1959; 259 in 2000) is located slightly northwest of the center of Reno County, Kansas on State Highway 61, approximately 10 miles southwest of Hutchinson, the county seat. The town of Partridge was begun in 1884. A year earlier, 1883, a group of Amish families moved from Shelbyville, Illinois to Reno County and settled in the Partridge and Yoder neighborhoods. The Partridge Old Order Amish settlement in 1955 consisted of three districts with 192 members: North Center District, 58 members, and South Center District, 70 members, both under John D. Yoder as bishop (ord. 1944), and East Center District, 64 members, with John N. Mast (ord. 1955) as bishop. The Plainview Conservative Mennonite Church was organized in August 1948 in the Partridge-Hutchinson community, most of whose members came from the Partridge Old Order Amish. The Conservative Church in 1957 had 97 members. -- Leander S. Keim
