Jan Maes (d. 1565)
Jan (Jehan) Maes, an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake on 16 March 1565 at Rijssel (Lille) in France. Jan, who was born at Bollezeele in Flanders and lived in Hondschoote, was arrested on 7 March 1563 at Halewijn, while he was visiting the preacher Jan de Swarte. A number of the Mennonites of Halewijn, including Jan de Swarte, were also arrested by the inquisitor Titelman. They all suffered martyrdom at Rijssel.
