Jan Hendriksz of Utrecht, a Dutch Anabaptist martyr, who had been baptized by Leenaert Bouwens, was at the age of 28 sentenced to die at the stake on 28 March 1558, at Rotterdam, with Peter van Eynoven, Evert Nouts, and two women, Annetgen Antheunisdochter and Stijntgen Jansdochter. The execution, however, miscarried. Its slow and horrible progress caused the crowd of spectators to become so greatly excited that they violently freed the victims. Jan Hendriksz, unconscious, was taken to a house near by and escaped. A song commemorating this execution, beginning "In den jare vijfthienhondert, En achtenvijftig claer," is found in Veelderhande Liedekens of 1569. The Rotterdam court records show that three days after this event Guert Willemszoon, who had taken part in the liberation of the above victims of persecution, was sentenced to death.
