The chronicles of the Anabaptists name Jerome of Salzburg as a companion of Hans Hut in Austria, probably because Salzburg was the scene of his martyrdom. Hans Hut had won a number of converts in Styria, where he had come about 15 June 1527; among them was "Hieronymus Herrmann von Mansee," who had previously been a monk at Ranzhofen and pastor in Braunau. He was chosen by lot under Hut's direction as one of four apostles to be sent out, the others being Leonhard Schiemer of Vöklabruck, Leonhard Dorfbrunner of Nürnberg, and Jakob Portner of Meissen, chaplain and preacher in the castle of the Lord von Rogendorf in Styria. Portner went to Freystadt in the mill quarter, Herrmann to Mondsee and Salzburg, and Schiemer to Vöklabruck and Gmunden. They preached Hut's doctrine, spreading it from Upper Austria to Salzburg and Bavaria. Herrmann therefore no doubt rejected the use of force and advocated community of goods. The reports of Wolfgang Künigl, the public prosecutor, indicate that many listened to his sermons, without, however, adopting Anabaptism. He was seized in Salzburg, and like Carius Binder and Wolfgang Wimmer, was burned at the stake.
