Peter Ewert was a member of the Kicin (Poland) Mennonite Church, was instrumental in taking the congregation into the Baptist Church. Johann Penner, a Mennonite at Adamov who had joined the Baptists, visited his relatives at Kicin in 1855 and spread Baptist ideas among members of the Mennonite congregation. In July 1860, G. F. Alf, the Baptist evangelist of Poland, visited Kicin and conducted meetings at the home of Peter Ewert. Ewert and others were baptized by immersion, and Johann Penner ordained Ewert as minister. Thus the Kicin Mennonite Church merged with the local Baptists, mostly of Lutheran background.

Soon some difficulty arose on the principle of nonresistance, which was unknown to the Baptists, but which the Mennonites wanted to maintain, and on the practice of footwashing and baptism. Peter Ewert carried on a lively correspondence regarding these questions with Alf and with Mennonite Brethren in Russia (Friesen, 244). According to Kupsch, Ewert and Penner with the Mennonite-Baptists went their own way for a while, but finally merged with the Baptists again. "Ewert recognized his error, repented and came back to the Baptists, and became a missionary. Penner also returned to the Baptists in 1863."
