Michael Weisse, a native of Silesia, Germany. He was a Roman Catholic priest who in 1531 became a minister of the Moravian Brethren in Moravia. He occupies a position of honor in the history of German hymnology by his hymnal, Ein New Gesangbuchlen. Five hymns of this hymnal also appear in the second part of the Ausbund, first printed in 1583, where four of them are attributed to Anabaptists and one to John Hus. These five hymns are: "Als Christus mit seinr waren lehr," by Michael Sattler (Ausbund, No. 46); "Du glaubigs hertz, so benedey," by Walpurga von Pappenheim (Ausbund, No. 409); "O Jesu, der du sehlig machst," by Lorentz Ringmacher (Ausbund, No. 407); "O Gott Schöpffer, Heilger Geist," by Christof Bifel (Ausbund, No. 274); and "Jesus Christus Gottes Sohn," by John Hus (Ausbund, No. 216). Wolkan, however, considers all these attributions erroneous, and says that all five of these hymns were written by Weisse. These songs are also found in Wackernagel, Kirchenlied III, Nos. 405, 334, 386, 320, 318.
