Jan Brouwer, a Dutch Mennonite preacher, b. 20 April 1760, at Franeker, studied at the Mennonite seminary in Amsterdam, was called as ministerial candidate to Leeuwarden in 1785, where he remained in active service until 1822 (d. 11 April 1838), and earned general respect. He was an early member of the council of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (1811), and did outstanding work in the field of philosophy. Three times he received the gold medal of the Teyler's Godgeleerd Genootschap and twice the silver medal. In 1797 he was engaged in a pen battle with the Reformed preacher E. Kist on the statement in the Heidelberg catechism, "We are inclined by nature to hate God and our neighbor." He was known as a man of great achievement, capable and well educated, a good theologian, in short, a man of importance.
