The Zion Mennonite Brethren congregation in Kitchener, ON began services and occupied its building in 1961. I.T. Ewert is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through division from the Kitchener Mennonite Brethren Church over language issues. The church was established primarily to serve the language needs of German-speaking immigrants from Brazil and Paraguay in the early 1960s. The services were entirely in German until 1978 when English was added. The congregation closed in 1982 primarily because of dwindling membership and increasing preferences for English.

In 1965 there were 59 members; in 1975, 110. The congregation had been affiliated with the Ontario Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches (1964), the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches (1964), and the General Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches (1964). The language of worship was German and English; the language transition occurred in 1978.

The congregation met at 91 Madison Ave. S., Kitchener, ON -- a former Jewish synagogue. Pastor Rudy Janzen served in 1982 as a congregational leader.
