Spring Valley Mennonite Church (General Conference Mennonite), formerly known as the Newport Mennonite Church, located 8 miles south of Newport, Pend Oreille County, Washington, began in the 1920s, when Mennonites of Russian-German background settled here having come from Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. The church was organized in 1928. Ministers who have served are John W. Kliewer, Peter D. Unruh, Rudolf Schmidt, and Rudolf Toews, who was the pastor in 1958, when the membership was 89.
