Wiebe, Johann D. (1853-1909)
Johann D. Wiebe, elected deacon of the Chortitzer Mennonite Church on 15 December 1881, was the oldest of eight surviving children of Bishop Gerhard Wiebe (1827-1900) and Elizabeth Dyck (1828-1876). Johann was born on 6 January 1853 in the village of Heubuden, Bergthal Colony, South Russia. He was baptized on 5 June 1872 and later that same year married Barbara Peters (1853-1884), daughter of Cornelius Peters (1816-1887) and Katharina Stoesz (1830-1900). They immigrated to Canada in 1875 along with their parents and siblings. Johann and Barbara settled in the village of Chortitz on the East Reserve, Manitoba where their 6 children were born of whom two died as infants. In 1884 Barbara herself died giving birth to their youngest daughter. The following year Johann married Maria Sawatsky (1866-?). Together they had 12 children of whom five died as infants. Their son Peter S. Wiebe (1888-1970) became Bishop of the Chortitzer Mennonite Church in 1932 where he served until retiring in 1968.
