Van Voorst, a Mennonite family, originally found at Emmerich, Germany, and from ca. 1670 at Amsterdam, Holland. At Emmerich Hendrik van Voorst, a shopkeeper, was a preacher of the Mennonite church in the 17th century. On 17-18 June 1672, he was interrogated by Femundus Formantin, a French Catholic theologian, who accompanied the French armies invading the Netherlands. The interesting discussion dealt with the Mennonite views on the Scriptures, baptism, marriage, adoration of the saints, the Incarnation, and the Holy Spirit. Van Voorst ably defended the Mennonite doctrines and Formantin was impressed by his answers. The result was that the Mennonites were not molested. In 1690 van Voorst was active in behalf of the Mennonite refugees from the Palatinate.

The first member of this family at Amsterdam was Ameldonck van Voorst, a native of Emmerich, who settled at Amsterdam as a medical doctor c1680. He was married in 1682 to Cecelia Verkolje, and a member of the Lamist Mennonite congregation. Paulus van Voorst, married to Christina Roeters, a member of the Lamist church and its deacon 1706-12 and 1718-24, and a trustee of the Collegiant Oranjeappel orphanage 1694-1706, was the treasurer of the Dutch Mennonite Committee for Foreign Needs ca. 1715-35. Most members of this family at Amsterdam were Lamists; some, however, in the 18th century were Zonists. The van Voorst family is found in Amsterdam until ca. 1820. Hendrik van Voorst belonged to this family.
