Verbeek (Verbeeck), a rather common Dutch family name both Mennonite and non-Mennonite. Joos(t) Verbeeck (Joos de Cruysere), a Mennonite elder, suffered martyrdom at Antwerp, Belgium in 1561. In the 17th and 18th centuries there were a number of Verbee(c)ks in both the Lamist and Zonist congregations of Amsterdam. They very likely stemmed from Mennonites who had left Flanders because of persecution ca. 1580. In Amsterdam the Verbe(c)ks were outstanding businessmen. Some of them served as deacons. Since the early 19th century there have been no Verbeeks among the Amsterdam Mennonites.
