Algemeene Belydenissen (1665)
Algemeene Belydenissen is a booklet published in 1665 by Pieter Arentsz in Amsterdam, reprinted in Haarlem in 1700 and at Rotterdam in 1739.
Following the introduction (Aen den Leser, signed Amsterdam, 21 September 1665, by Tobias Govertsz van den Wyngaert and Isaack van Vreden), the booklet presents the following six confessions of faith: Concept van Ceulen; Van den Eenigen Godt, Vader, Soon ende Heyligen Geest, En van de Mensch-werdinge des Soons Godts (the confession of Outerman); Olyf-tacx; Confessie der Vereenighde Vriesen ende Hooghduytschen; De Artickelen des Christelijcken Geloofs (the Dordrecht Confession). The Amsterdam copy adds, with separate pagination and signature, the Oprecht Verbündt van Eenigheydt.
Shortly before the split between the Lamists and Zonists in Amsterdam, the wish had been expressed in June 1660 at a conference of conservative leaders at Leiden, to have a new and general edition of the accepted confessions of faith published. After the Lammerenhrijg, when the conservative congregations united among themselves as the Zonists, the wish was carried out. In the first place, says the Foreword, in order to show that "we are still standing unchanged in the teaching of the Gospel, accepted by our forefathers"; in the second place, in order to make the basis of the Zonists known; and in the third place, because some confessions have been sold out and are no longer obtainable.
The third edition of the booklet (1739 at Rotterdam) was published by I.P.S. (Jan Philipsz Schabaelje),who added: de Principale Artykelen des Geloofseeniger Doopsgez. Gemeente, die men noemt Waterlanders, Vlamingen en Duitschen, getrokken uit haar uit gegevene Confessien. A second edition had appeared at Haarlem in 1700.
