Nieuwendam (Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands)
Nieuwendam, once an independent village northeast of Amsterdam, is now incorporated into the city. A Mennonite church was built in the village in 1843 with the support of Mennonites living there, especially from the Cleyndert family. It was dedicated on 9 July 1843 by Jan Boeke, minister of the Amsterdam congregation. Its care was the responsibility of the Cleyndert family for decades. The church became the property of the Amsterdam congregation.
In 1842 the membership of the Nieuwendam congregation was 23, 52 in 1918, 35 in 1940, and 450 in 1955. It was originally served by preachers from Amsterdam, Haarlem, De Zaanstreek, and the students at the Mennonite seminary, then by the Amsterdam preachers and the Ring of North Holland, and later by the Amsterdam pastors. Miss C. W. Brugman served here 1947-1955 and W. Veen after 1955; the latter at the same time served as the pastor of Den Ilp-Landsmeer. The church serves Mennonites who live in the suburb of North Amsterdam.
