Hoorn, Den (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)
Den Hoorn is a village of 550 inhabitants (in 1954) in the southern part of the island Texel in the Dutch province of North Holland. On the island the Anabaptist movement found early entry (ca. 1534). Leenaert Bouwens visited the island twice (1560). The martyr Jan Gerritsz and Elder Simon Fijts are also known.
In 1709 the congregation at Hoorn dissolved its union with Burg, Waal, and Oosterend. It has a church record, which began in 1753, by the preacher Johannes Cuperus. From 1709 to 1922 it existed as an independent congregation. In the latter year it joined the Helder congregation in the engagement of a minister. This union lasted until 1941. Then the congregation of den Hoorn united with that of Burg on the island of Texel, all Mennonites of this island now belonging to one congregation, called that of Texel.
In the 16th-17th centuries the congregation of den Hoorn belonged to the Waterlander branch of the Mennonites. Den Hoorn built a meetinghouse in 1850; an organ was acquired in 1896. The membership was always small: 42 baptized members in 1861; 42 in 1900; 43 in 1940.
The last minister of the independent congregation was R. Kuperus (1919-1920). From 1922 to 1941 it was served by the pastor of Den Helder.
