Ramseyer, Lloyd L. (1899-1977)
Lloyd Louis Ramseyer: college president; born 5 November 1899 near Hudson, McLean County, Illinois, to Michael and Anna (Stahly) Ramseyer. He married Ferne Yoder of Middlebury, Indiana on 4 June 1927. Their children were Robert, Mary Jean (Wells), and William. Lloyd Ramseyer died 24 June 1977.
Lloyd Ramseyer studied at Bluffton College (AB, biology) and Ohio State University (MA, PhD in audio-visual education, 1938). He was a high school teacher, coach, and principal in Heyworth, Illinois, 1924-1936, and summer school faculty member at Bowling Green State University and in Ohio State University, 1938-1941. He co-authored with his major professor at Ohio State University a standard textbook on the use of motion pictures in teaching (1937).
During his long tenure as president of Bluffton College, 1938-1965, the school received North Central Association accreditation (1953), added several significant instructional departments and a number of new buildings, gained financial stability, and grew from fewer than 100 students to more then 500. After 1965 Lloyd and Ferne Ramseyer directed the Mennonite Central Committee relief program in Korea. Lloyd Ramseyer was also an interim pastor of three congregations in Ohio and Kansas; served on several conference and institutional boards, including Mennonite Biblical Seminary (1962-1977) and the Board of Education and Publication (General Conference Mennonite; chairman, 1950-1962); and was active in college administrators' professional associations, 1950-1957.
Some of Ramseyer's weekly chapel talks at Bluffton College were published as The More Excellent Way (1965). During his presidency at Bluffton College he was a valiant proponent of truth, forthrightness and practicality in all phases of life and a strong supporter of the Mennonite peace position at a time when such a firm stand was not popular.
