Matrei isa village in Tyrol, Austria, located between Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass, where the Anabaptist movement found many adherents in the 16th century. Many of them emigrated to Moravia. In 1544 two persons who knew the plan of an Anabaptist family to migrate but did not reveal it were fined 50 florins. Others were called to account for sheltering and feeding Anabaptists. A considerable emigration to Moravia took place in 1560.
