Jacobus Craandijk Doopsgezind Jaarboekje (1915)

Jacobus Craandijk, born 7 September 1834 at Amsterdam, died 3 June 1912 at Haarlem, was of an old Mennonite family, the son of Pieter Hendrik Craandijk, a wood dealer and shipowner at Amsterdam, and Maria van Coppenaal.  He studied at the Mennonite Seminary at Amsterdam, after which he served the following congregations as a pastor: Borne 1859-1862, Rotterdam 1862-1884, and Haarlem 1884-1900. Craandijk was very influential in the Dutch Brotherhood. He was the organizer and president of an important conference of prominent Dutch Mennonite leaders held at Amsterdam in 1879, where the questions were discussed whether a member of a non-Mennonite church, desiring to be a member of a Mennonite congregation, should be baptized or not, and if persons could be admitted as members of the church without having received baptism on their confession.

Craandijk's activities were not limited to the Mennonites. From 1864 to 1911 he was a member of the board of the (General) Nederlandsch Zendelings Genootschap (Dutch Mission Society), and in 1897 as its president he held an address at the centennial celebration of this mission society.

Craandijk wrote a large number of (mostly literary) articles in many Dutch periodicals. His popular booklets, Wandelingen door Nederland (Rambles through the Netherlands), show Craandijk as a man who knew and loved the beauties of his fatherland, both in the towns and in the country.

Craandijk was married 1861 to Anna Geertruida Ballot, of Borne.
