Vijg family

Vijg(h), a former Dutch Mennonite family, whose members were found in a number of congregations in the 17th and 18th centuries, e.g., Rotterdam, Bridle, and Amsterdam. A conservative branch of this family at Amsterdam were members of the Zonist church, but most of the Vijghs were rather liberal and frequented Collegiant meetings; Jacques Vijgh, e.g., a flax merchant of Rotterdam, was in 1729 baptized as a Mennonite by immersion. Dirk van Beek, a Mennonite minister of Rotterdam, administered this baptism at Schiedam. In the 18th century some Vijghs left the Mennonite Church, the liberals at Rotterdam and Amsterdam joining the Remonstrants and the conservatives of Amsterdam the Reformed Church.
