Syvaert (Sywert) Pieters(z), a preacher of the Old Frisian Mennonites at Hoorn, Holland, in temperament and thought like P. J. Twisck, wrote in collaboration with Twisck the foreword to the Hoorn book of martyrs (1617), which caused great offense by its violent attack upon the Waterlanders. This foreword contains a confession of faith compiled from the works of Menno Simons. The confession, entitled Bekentenisse des Gheloofs nae Godes Woort: also de selvighe van vele jaren herwaert ende noch tegenwoordich, by diemen Mennisten noemt: Ghelooft, Gheleert ende Beleeft wordt, . . . was reprinted twice as a separate edition at Hoorn in 1620 and without date but before 1626. Pieters is also the author of Corte aenwijsinghe, voorgestelt in eenighe Vraghen vande voornaemste mishandelinghen der Vlaminghen ende Vriesen, in den twist van den Jare 1566, ende volgens teghen malcanderen bedreven, . . . (Hoorn, 1634). This book deals with the Frisian-Flemish quarrel and schism. The book, taking the view of the Frisians in a very prejudiced manner, gives some valuable information concerning the schism. Neff’s assertion (ML III, 372) that Pieters wrote the introduction to the documents of unification between four congregations in Friesland, is a mistake. This unification came into being about 1560, before Pieters was born.
