Von Bylandt was a family of earls having its seat in Rheydt in Rhenish Prussia, which for more than 100 years offered toleration and protection from the repressions of the government to Anabaptists living on their estates. At first Otto von Bylandt, who played an influential role of power in the court of Duke William in Düsseldorf, protected them against all persecution by the imperial government. "In 1594 the first Anabaptist, Peter auf der Heuren, is mentioned. Ten years later their number had increased; they conducted their services in night meetings with singing and preaching. In 1646 they seem to have been organized in a congregation with their own deacons. At the end of the 17th century the von Bylandt family offered them residence within the castle walls until they were forcibly expelled on July 16 on command of the Palatine elector."
