Hastenrath, Theunis (d. 1551)
Theunis (Thönis, Teunis, Tonnis) van Hastenrath (Hastenraedt, Haustelraed), an Anabaptist elder and martyr, burned at the stake at Linnich on the Roer, Germany, on 30 June 1551. Theunis van Hastenraedt, who is identical with Anthonis von Asselroye or Assenray, was a native of Hastenrath, Germany, near the Dutch town of Roermond. After his conversion he studied the Holy Scriptures for 15 years, during which time he seldom preached. He also read the books of Menno Simons. As an elder he preached and baptized after 1545 in many towns of the duchies of Jülich and Upper-Gelre. Among the places where he was baptizing, he himself mentions Illikhoven, Loevenich, Hastenrath, Weert, Maastricht, Cologne, Monschau, Cleve, and Goch. In 1547 he was present at a meeting of Mennonite elders at Goch, where Adam Pastor was excommunicated. His interesting confession at his trial appeared in Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1909.
