Gorinchem (or Gorkum), a city on the Merwede in the Dutch province of South Holland, (pop. 1947 15,321, 34 Mennonites; pop. 2004 34,600), was an Anabaptist center about 1538, and later the seat of a Mennonite congregation. Leenaert Bouwens baptized 56 persons there in 1563-1565. The congregation later joined the Flemish Mennonite group; Jacob van der Heyde Sebrechts and Jan Jansz van de Kruysen from here signed the Dordrecht Confession in 1632. In 1649 it was represented at the conference of the Flemish at Haarlem. Soon after, the congregation, which was a very small one, had no preacher of its. own. It was for more than 40 years served by preachers of other Flemish congregations, especially of Utrecht. The congregation of Gorinchem is not mentioned in the first [[Naamlijst der tegenwoordig in dienst zijnde predikanten der Mennoniten in de Vereenigde Nederlanden|Naamlijst]] of 1731; hence it must have died out before this year.

Since 1948 there has been a Mennonite circle at Gorinchem,  21 members in 1955, in charge of the congregation of Dordrecht. Together with the Remonstrant group some services were conducted (7-10 each year) in the city orphanage.
