Müller, Johannes (1598-1672)
Johannes Müller (1598-1672), a Lutheran preacher and theologian, wrote while he was in Hamburg, Germany, the book Anabaptismus. Lübeck-Leipzig, 1695). The immediate occasion for writing this book was the transfer of a member of the state church to the Mennonites. The book dealt with the 33 articles of the confession of faith drawn up by the Old Frisian leaders P. J. Twisck and Sywaert Pietersz and found in the preface of the Groot Offerboek (i.e., Historie der Warachtighe getuygen Jesu Christi . . . , Hoorn, 1617). A separate edition of this confession was edited and published in Hoorn 1620, and is also found in van Braght's Martyrs Mirror. From the 33 articles Müller extracted 26 errors. Though his theological equipment is obviously superior, the book was not an adequate refutation, but a polemic, which though correct on a few points (such as original sin) did not understand the Biblicistic concern of the Mennonites. The effects of this refutation are not known.
