Joost Sijbrandsz Buyck was born in 1505 at Amsterdam, and died 10 February 1588 at Leiden. He was promoted to the rank of a noble by King Christian of Denmarkin 1521, became sheriff at Amsterdam in 1532, and burgomaster of this city for the first time in 1549 and was thereafter re-elected 17 times. He defended the town against the Reformation, and when Amsterdam fell, i.e., the Catholics lost, in 1578, Buyck was banned. Holding the office of sheriff, he was present in connection with many court procedures against the Anabaptists and Mennonites. In these instances he showed himself a decided opponent but moderate in his judgment. Of significance is his writing concerning the rise of the Anabaptists: Nieuwe maaren of verhaal van tegen voorgevallen is binnen Amsterdam en op andere plaatsen in de jaren 1534 tot 1536 (The latest tidings or the story of those happenings in Amsterdam and other places during the years 1534 to 1536). This work, which has the faults of all the historical writing of that period—prejudice and partisanship—contains many valuable particulars concerning this period. It was reprinted by P. Scheltema in Amstel’s Oudheid (1856) II.
