Christlicher Gemeinde-Kalender (Periodical)
The Christlicher Gemeinde-Kalender was an annual published by the South German Mennonite Conference beginning in 1892 usually in editions of 2,000. At the conference of the Mennonites of the Palatinate and Baden (Konferenz der Süddeutschen Mennoniten) on 11 November 1890, Preacher Jakob Ellenberger of Friedelsheim promoted the idea of publishing an almanac, and found almost unanimous approval. A committee was chosen (Jakob Ellenberger of Friedelsheim, Ph. Kieferndorf of Monsheim, Christian Neff of Weierhof, Christian Hege of Breitenau, Philipp Hege of Oberbiegelhof, and Jakob Hege of Reihen) to plan the almanac. Besides the calendar, the almanac contained a section of information and entertainment, with usually a story or two and various articles on the history and present state of the Mennonite brotherhood. Its contents made it a very important source for the study of Mennonite history. An important feature was the directory of all Mennonite congregations in Europe outside of Holland and Russia. The 1898 issue had only West Prussia, 1899 all Germany; 1902 first included France, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. It was suspended 1942-1950 inclusive because of the war and postwar difficulties. Editors were: J. Ellenberger, 1892-1901; J. Hege, 1892-1912; A. Hirschler, 1902-1932; A. Braun, 1933-1941. The West Prussian Mennonite Conference became joint publisher in 1934.
In 1951 it resumed publication as the Mennonitischer Gemeinde-Kalender and continued the volume numbering.
