Valter, Gerbrand (1740-1818)
Gerbrand Valter, b. 1740 at Amsterdam (?), d. 8 December 1818, at Purmerend, married to Maria Houttuyn, was a Dutch Mennonite preacher, serving at Langedijk-Koedijk 1771-?, Hoorn until 1778, Edam 1778-80, and Oostzaan-Zuid 1780-1809. Though he did not receive a theological training for the ministry, he was a man of wide knowledge and trained other young men for the ministry. Among his pupils was Nicolaas Messchaert. Valter published Vraagen over de Voornaamste Waarheden van den Christelyken Godsdienst (Amsterdam, 1784). The well-known elder Cornelis Ris of Hoorn was his uncle.
