Rudolf Stähelin (1811-1900), a Swiss Protestant historian, professor of theology at the University of Basel. His most important work, Huldreich Zwingli (1895 and 1897), presents the beginnings of the Anabaptist movement in Zürich and in Switzerland; it is a very valuable book. Other works of particular interest to Mennonites are Die ersten Märtyrer des evangelischen Glaubens in der Schweiz (1883), his treatise on Vadian in Beiträge zur vaterländischen Geschichte (Basel, 1882), Das theologische Lebens werk Johann Oeholampads (Leipzig, 1939), and Briefe und Akten zum Leben Oekolampads I and II (Leipzig, 1927-34).
