Dyck, John (1928-1999)
John Dyck: businessman and director of Mennonite research; born 10 August 1928 in Neuhorst, Manitoba, to Peter J. and Katharina (Wiebe) Dyck as the 8th of 9 children in the family. Because his father was a teacher, the family moved several times as job opportunities arose. John spent a large part of his younger years in Reinland, Manitoba.
He spent his working years in various aspects of retail work, from his job at a hardware store in Winkler to his employment as general manager of a farm equipment company. He worked extensively with the Chamber of Commerce, started his own insurance agency, and held sales training classes. In 1960 he moved to Winnipeg. In the early 1980s when the agricultural industry underwent severe upheaval and turmoil, John became unemployed. With the loss the business employment, his growing involvement in Mennonite Studies intensified. He was an active participant with the Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society and he worked as the research director for the Hanover Steinbach Historical Society. He was the author or editor of numerous books including a biography, local community history and institutional history. (See bibliography) He contributed over 20 articles to Mennonite historical journals and spoke at various historical conferences.
John Dyck was baptized in 1948. He was married to Elma Penner (b. 1932 in Gnadenthal, Manitoba) on 22 May 1952. They had four children. In Winkler they were members of the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church and in Winnipeg the family were active members of the Burrows Bethel Mennonite Church. John died of cancer on 22 June 1999 in Winnipeg and his funeral was conducted in the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church.
