Adriaen Pan (d. 1559)
Adriaen Pan (also called A. Peeterssone Pan), an Anabaptist martyr, was a native of Driel in the Dutch province of Gelderland, and with his wife Neelken Jacops lived at Nijvel (Nivelles), south of Brussels. Driven by the persecution, they fled from Nijvel to Antwerp. Here they were captured on 25 April 1559, and put into the Steen prison; both were condemned to death. Their house furnishings were sold for about seventy-five guilders. Adriaen was sentenced on 16 June and beheaded on 18 June 1559. The Offer des Heeren and later martyr books contain two short letters written by Adriaen, which reveal that he was an ordinary man, who as he himself said, "did not have the gift of writing very well." A song about Adriaen and Neelken, "Duysternis gaet van henen, wanneer dat licht coemt aen" (Darkness goes from hence, whene'er that light arrives), appears in Het Offer and is mentioned in Die Lieder der Wiedertäufer.
