Haan, Thoman (d. 1592)
Thoman Haan (Han), an Anabaptist martyr of Nikolsburg, Moravia, was seized 12 May 1592 at Freiburg in Bavaria, cruelly tortured, and beheaded and burned on 18 June. He endured his martyrdom singing and praying. His death is the subject of two hymns. One of these, with 38 stanzas, contains the acrostic, "Thoman Han," and begins, "Thuet losen, was ich singen will, den Fromen zu trost und zu muete"; the other, which also deals with the martyrdom of Matthäus Mair, has the acrostic, "Thoman Han, Matheus Mair," contains 20 stanzas, and begins, "Trost, Fried und Freud, Standhaftigkeit im Herrn."
