Rommeken (d. 1555)
Rommeken, an Anabaptist martyr, who was burned at the stake at Antwerp, Belgium, in 1555. His name is found in hymn No. 16, "Aenhoort God, hemelsche Vader" (Hear, O God, heavenly Father), of the Lietboecxken. Van Braght's short account in the Martyrs' Mirror, which states that he died valiantly, follows the information given in the Offer. The exact date of the execution and a number of details about this martyr have been published by P. Génard in the Antwerpsch Archieven-blad. His official name was Rombout Smit, and he was a native of Antwerp, by trade an engraver on glass. He was a master craftsman and from 1543 a member of the painters' guild of St. Luke. He was burned on the market place of Antwerp on 10 December 1555.
