Zijldijk, a hamlet in the Dutch province of Groningen, the seat of a Mennonite congregation, formerly belonging to the Groningen Old Flemish branch. The congregation existed from about 1550; Leenaert Bouwens baptized eight persons here (possibly only two, the six others having been baptized at 'tZandt, a village about four miles south of Zijldijk). The Zijldijk meetinghouse, dating from 1791, is a fine specimen of the old barn type. The membership was always small: cl30 in 1710, 89 in 1733, 33 in 1767, 13 in 1802, 62 in 1861, 83 in 1900, 39 in 1926, 65 in 1958. Most of the members live in the villages surrounding Zijldijk. On 11 November 1686, the congregation was severely struck by a flood, seven adults and fourteen children of members perishing in the waters; much livestock was lost. Among the old family names in this congregation are Dijkema, Eendhuizen, Rengers, Doornbos, Huizinga, Coolman, and Gorter.

Until 1804 the Zijldijk church was served by lay preachers chosen from the members. In that year the first outside minister was called: A. S. Cuperus, serving 1804-1812, followed by Simon Gorter 1813-1856. The first minister educated at the Amsterdam Mennonite seminary to serve here was A. Hermansz ten Cate, serving 1856-1866, followed by Samuel Cramer 1866-1870, I. H. Boeke 1870-1872, L. T. Goteling Vinnes 1873-1873, A. Mulder 1874-1888, R. Kuiken 1891-1893, D. Haars 1895-1902, A. de Vries Mzn 1903-1906, D. Attema 1907-1909, S. H. N. Gorter 1910-1912, W. J. Hilverda 1913-1916, H. Bussemaker 1917-1924, N. van der Zijpp 1926-1928, W. Mesdag 1929-1934, Th. van der Veer 1934-1939, Miss M. Knot 1939-1946, and M. J. J. Gaaikema 1947-. Church activities are a women's circle, Sunday school, and a young members' group.
