Barthold Nikolaus Krohn, a German Protestant theologian, was employed as a tutor in the home of the Mennonite Hermann Goverts of Hamburg and later became a preacher in the church of St. Mary Magdalene in Hamburg. He is the author of a book titled Geschichte der fanatischen und enthusiastischen Wiedertäufer vornehmlich in Niederdeutschland. Melchior Hofmann und die Secte der Hofmannianer (Leipzig, 1758). The book is based on sound scholarly research and for its time represents a notable achievement. But it has been far overtaken by the writings of M. L. Leendertz and F. O. zur Linden.

Of particular interest is the promise of the author to continue his work in the form of a general history of the Anabaptists and Mennonites in the following series: The second book, Jan Matthys, Jan van Leyden, Johann Theodorici Batenburg, oder die Sekten der aufrührerischen Wiedertäufer and sogenannten Schwerdtgeister in den Niederlanden und in Westphalen; the third book, Ubbo Philipps oder die Sekte der Ubboniten; the fourth book, Menno Simons oder die Sekte der Mennonisten, das ist der wehrlosen und waffenlosen Taufgesinnten in den Niederlanden und in den von ihnen an andere Orte gepftanzten Gemeinen. But he did not get beyond gathering the material. In 1782 he gave his entire collection of manuscript notes to the city library of Hamburg, consisting of 36 volumes folio and 22 volumes quarto. This material was destroyed during World War II. Most of it was taken from Ottius. The [[Amsterdam Mennonite Library (Bibliotheek en Archief van de Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Amsterdam)|Amsterdam Mennonite library]] has a paper by Krohn, copied by A. M. Cramer from the original manuscript, "Allgemeine Geschichte der Taufgesinnten oder Mennoniten in den Niederlanden."
