Pieter Claesz (Peter Coster), an Anabaptist martyr, who had been a sexton of the Catholic church at Zaandam, moved to Amsterdam, joined the Anabaptists there, being baptized by Pieter de Houtzager, and was ordained as a preacher by Bartholomeus, that is, Bartel Boeckbinder. During his trial he declared that he had baptized only one person. In March 1534 he was among the Anabaptists who sailed from Amsterdam to Bergklooster in order to go on to Münster. He was released, and returned to Amsterdam; but shortly after he was betrayed by a woman and seized; because he had been baptized and was preaching he was condemned to death and beheaded on 25 May 1535.
