Wybo Fijnje, born 24 January 1750 at Zwolle, studied at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary 1766-1767, and then at the University of Leiden, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1774. He was a son of Jan Wybes Fijnje of Harlingen (and Johanna Seije), who studied at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary in 1739-1745, served for a while at Zwolle and 1751-ca. 1763 at Haar¬lem. Wybo Fijnje was for a time pastor of the Mennonite congregation at Deventer, but resigned in order to devote himself to political science. He was editor of the Delftsche Courant and was compelled to flee in 1787 on account of his "Patriot" opinions. After the revolution of 1795 he was made director of affairs in the government of the Dutch East Indies. In 1798 he had to flee again. When he returned to The Hague he was seized but was released upon the intercession of the French ambassador. He died in Amsterdam on 5 October 1809. He is the author of the following works: Beknopt tydrekenkundig overzicht der algemeene geschiedenis (1783) and Theoriae systematis universi (1774). His son H. F. Fijnje van Salverda (1796-1889) was chief inspector of the water office and planned the reclamation of the Haarlem Lake.
