Hertogenbosch (Noord-Brabant, Netherlands)
's Hertogenbosch, capital of the Dutch province of North Brabant (1953 pop. 61,143; largely Roman Catholic; only a few Mennonites; 2007 pop. 136,499), was in the 16th century a center of Anabaptism. Bartel Boeckbinder and Leentgen Hendricksz, who were executed because of Anabaptism, were natives of 's Hertogenbosch. About 1538 there was a congregation, of which Paulus van Drunen was an elder. Eight members of this congregation, including van Drunen, were put to death in September 1538 or 1539 at Vught near 's Hertogenbosch, but in later times also there was a congregation. About 1544 there was here some activity of the adherents of Jan van Batenburg and of David Joris. Magdalena from Waterland (near Amsterdam), a follower of David Joris, was executed at Vught on 14 August 1544. Elder Gillis van Aken performed baptism here in the home of a shoemaker in June 1545. According to the confession of Jan van Sol in 1550 Hughe Matthyszoon had preached in 's Hertogenbosch; Leenaert Bouwens baptized 35 persons here in 1557‑1561 and 32 in 1563‑1565. In December 1569 or January 1570 on his journey from Flanders to Cologne the Elder Hans Busschaert visited 's Hertogenbosch. The congregation still existed but was in a rather sad condition as he states in his letter of 29 January 1570, to Antwerp. Soon after it must have disappeared. Since 1944 there has been a Mennonite fellowship (Kring) of 30 members at 's Hertogenbosch‑Vught, served by the preacher of Eindhoven. Services were held usually monthly in the Lutheran church. There was also a ladies' circle.
