Fije (d. 1549)
Fije (Feije Bauckezoon), an Anabaptist martyr, was seized with Eelke three weeks before Easter 1549 at Oldeboorn, Dutch province of Friesland. During his trial he confessed that he had attended many secret meetings, at which he heard the Scriptures explained by "lay persons." Before the judge they were both greatly excited, kissed each other, and danced for joy in being permitted to suffer martyrdom; in this they were an exception to most of the martyrs. They were in the same prison as the noted martyr Elisabeth. Fije was first (7 June 1549) sentenced to death by beheading, but "persisting in his unbelief," the sentence was increased in severity, and he was executed on that very day by burning at the stake. At his execution Fije refused the bread and wine offered him, saying he had food prepared for him in heaven. Fije was burned, Eelken was beheaded on 7 June 1549 at Leeuwarden, in the presence of some monks. To the spectators he cried out, "Weep not for me, but for your sins." A hymn was written on his martyrdom, "Nae u belooft, o goede Heer" (According to Thy promise, O good Lord.
