Hesta, Leonardus (1856-1901)
Leonardus Hesta was a Dutch Mennonite minister born 9 May 1856, died 14 April 1901 at Haarlem. He studied at the universities of Utrecht and Amsterdam, became a ministerial candidate in 1881, and served the congregations of Rottevalle in Friesland 1880-1884, Norden in East Friesland, Germany, 1884-1889, Sneek in Friesland 1889-1890, and Haarlem 1890 until his death. His contributions to his congregations and to the Mennonite community were varied and significant. He was a member of the executive board of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (Dutch General Conference) and treasurer of the Fund, later the Association in Behalf of Mennonite Orphans. For many years he was the active leader of the committee for the Mennonites in the Diaspora (see Verstrooiing). He was a collector of Mennonite writings and well versed in its history. In 1887 he became one of the first editors of the Zondagsbode. He published a historical paper in the Doopsgezinde Bijdragen of 1892, and three German sermons: Die Christliche Hoffnung (Altona, 1887); Predigt über Phil. I, 25 (Norden, 1888), and Gedächtnisrede über 2. Sam. 1, 26a (funeral sermon for J. Pol) (Norden,1888).
