Verhelle, Pieter (b. ca. 1660)
Pieter Verhelle, b. ca. 1660 at Haarlem, Holland, was a preacher of the Flemish Mennonite congregation at Haarlem until 1693, when he moved to Hamburg, Germany, and served there from 1694 until after 1710. A sermon of his, Predigt, is published with Roosen's Unschuld (Ratzeburg, 1702). Like his father-in-law, Gerhard Roosen, he held the conservative Zonist doctrines, whereas Jan de Lanoy, also a preacher of the Hamburg-Altona congregation, was more Lamist (liberal). In his sermons Verhelle often attacked de Lanoy's views. Pieter Verhelle was a member of the Verhelle family that stemmed from Mennonite emigrants from Flanders, Belgium, found at Haarlem from ca. 1600.
