Suderman family
Suderman, a Dutch Mennonite family, apparently not related to the West Prussian Suderman(n) family, was found at Rotterdam, Holland, in the 17th and 18th centuries. Of these Rotterdam Sudermans, all merchants, some were Old Flemish, for example, Elyas Suderman, who was a deacon of the Old Flemish congregation from 1662, while others belonged to the Waterlander and later to the United Rotterdam Mennonite Church. Willem Suderman (d. 1706) was a preacher of the Waterlanders 1675- 700 and of the united church 1700-1701. In 1677-1684, for some unknown reason, he did not serve. It may have been because of Socinian opinions. He was also an ardent Collegiant. In 1688 he was secretary of the Zuidholland Sociëteit. Jan Suderman, a deacon of the united congregation from 1710, who may have been a son of preacher Willem Suderman, was in 1711 a representative of the Rotterdam congregation in the Dutch Committee for Foreign Needs. In 1718 he opposed the resolution of the church board to call pastor Daniel van Heyst. Concerning this matter Jan Suderman and Aelbert van Meurs published Protest gedaen tegen de maniere van't beroepen van . . . n D. v.H. (Rotterdam, 1718). Suderman also published De Godlievende Ziel, vertoont in Zinnebeeiden (Amsterdam, 1724, repr. at Utrecht, 1749).
