Kurgan Oblast and city are located on the Trans-Siberian Railroad in southern Asiatic Russia. This region was established during World War II out of the eastern part of the Chelyabinsk Oblast, with the city of Kurgan as capital. It is bounded on the east and south by Kazakhstan. Some Mennonites who were exiled before and during World War II are located in this region (see Siberia).
