Springer, Hans (d. 1592)
Hans Springer, an Anabaptist martyr in Iglau, Moravia. The Anabaptist movement gained adherents here very early; but through the influence of Paul Speratus Lutheranism predominated and Anabaptism was suppressed, especially by the Lutheran clergy, as in 1529, 1536, and 1537. The city records and council reports call the Anabaptists "böse Buben." It was thus impossible for the Anabaptists to organize a congregation. Nevertheless there were occasionally some Anabaptists found in Iglau, and at the end of the century they apparently increased in number. Their leader and preacher was Hans Springer. The city council again took steps to suppress them. In 1592 Hans Springer was surprised in his house and "with great violence was miserably and painfully slain." The erection of the fountain on the market place (1592-94) is attributed to the Anabaptists.
