Pieter Vettewarier, an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on the market place at Antwerp, Belgium, on 16 December 1558. His name is commemorated in the hymn "Aenhoort Godt, hemelsche Vader" (Hear, O God, heavenly Father), No. 16 of the Lietboecxken. Some particulars about this martyr have been published by Génard in the Antwerpsch Archieven-Blad. His official name was Pieter Henricx; he had a grocery store with the name "In de Vettewary," hence his name. Génard also lists Pieter van Hese, "vettewarier int Lelyken," who had been arrested on 11 June 1535, and sentenced on 24 December 1535, to a pilgrimage to Nicosie, because he had associated with the Anabaptists and other "Lutherans," that is, heretics. This man may have been identical with Pieter Vettewarier.
