Salatiga (Indonesia)
Salatiga, Indonesia, a retirement community and military town of about 100,000 inhabitants, is located in the highlands of Central Java, about 50 km (30 miles) south of the provincial capital, Semarang. Salatiga is the home of Satya Wacana Christian University, an interdenominational university of strong reputation. The two Mennonite conferences of Central Java have cooperated in the development of the school and have held key positions on the board of trustees and faculty. In the late 1980s it has 6,000 students.
In the late 1960s the conference of the Persatuan Gereja-Gereja Kristen Muria Indonesia (Muria Christian Church of Indonesia) launched an effort to begin a congregation in Salatiga. That congregation grew out of a student fellowship but intentionally spread into the wider community. In less than a decade it had grown to well over 600 members and has developed a number of branches in and around the city of Salatiga.
