Mennonite Historical Society (Goshen, Indiana, USA)
The Mennonite Historical Society was founded in October 1924, after an earlier organization by the same name founded on the Goshen College campus in 1921 by John J. Fisher and others had discontinued. The membership of the Society, which has varied from 50 to 125, was limited in the 1950s to the faculty and students of Goshen College and occasional persons from the immediate community. The Society had regularly held three or four meetings during the school year, at which scholarly and popular addresses were given. It gave strong support to the Mennonite Historical Library at Goshen College, having contributed over $8,000 for this purpose by 1957. It has been the publisher of the Mennonite Quarterly Review since its founding in 1927, and has been the publisher (since 1953 editor only) of the scholarly monograph series known as "Studies in Anabaptist and Mennonite History," in which eight volumes have been published between 1929 and 1956. Subsidies were granted to others. The officers in 1957 were Harold S. Bender president (since the beginning in 1924), G. F. Hershberger vice-president (1925-32, 1935- ), J. C. Wenger secretary (1947- ) following Silas Hertzler (1927-1941) and John Umble (1941-1947), J. Howard Kauffman treasurer, and S. C. Yoder as a member of the executive committee (1943- ). Ernst Correll was an active member of the organization 1924-1929, having been a cofounder. The Society was governed by a board of fifteen directors, twelve of whom were faculty members and three students. In addition to the officers listed above the following have been long-time directors and were still serving in 1956: W. H. Smith since 1930, Nelson Springer since 1938, Carl Kreider since 1945, and Melvin Gingerich since 1947.
