Kipfer has been a family name found among the Mennonites in Switzerland since the rise of Anabaptism. Elizabeth Kipfer died as martyr in 1538. Johannes Kipfer of Langnau, where the family has been resident for centuries since 1680, was long the editor of the Zionspilger, the weekly periodical of the Mennonites in Switzerland. To this family also belonged Ulrich Kipfer. Another Ulrich Kipfer, from Frittenbach, who was a preacher of the Emmental congregation, left the Emmental with a number of other Mennonites in 1852 to settle in Adams County, IN, where he was a minister until he died in 1866. The name is also found among Swiss Mennonites in Ontario. In Perth County, Ontario, an Amish congregation of 125 members was known as the Kipfer group.
