Hermann Friesen, born in West Prussia, was head of one of the first families to immigrate to Russia after the end of the Napoleonic wars in 1815. Friesen married three times. Although there has been no record found of his first wife's name, their marriage produced six children -- three sons and three daughters, the youngest of which was born in 1792. Friesen married his second wife, Anna Penner, in 1796 while living in Altendorf, West Prussia. In 1804 Friesen married Helena Klingenberg (a widow Klassen), and moved to Stobbendorf, West Prussia. This marriage produced five children -- two daughters and three sons.

Three of Friesen's older children left for Russia in 1815. His daughter, Eliesabeth, married Aron Südermann (born 1792), son of Abraham Südermann, who had immigrated to Russia in 1796 and settled in Österwick in the Old Colony. Friesen's sons Hermann and Johann settled in the village of Schönau in the Molotschna Colony. In 1819 Friesen himself decided to immigrate to Russia with three of his younger children -- Jacob, Dirk and Gerhard. They settled in the village of Margenau in the Molotschna Colony. Hermann Friesen died shortly after arriving in Margenau in 1819 having seen six of his children settled in the Mennonite villages of South Russia.
