Ellert (Ellart) Jans, an Anabaptist martyr, a tailor of Woerden, Dutch province of South Holland, baptized by Gillis van Aken, was executed by burning at the stake with five men and two women of the same faith at Amsterdam on 20 March 1549. He could have taken part in a successful escape, but declined because he had a wooden leg. He cheerfully went to the place of execution and talked to his cousin Jan Jans whom he met on the way, so that all that heard were amazed. Through the iron bars of his prison he handed his cousin his will, and admonished him to join the brotherhood of the cross. His cousin did so. His martyrdom is sung in the hymn which begins, “Tis nu schier al vervult ons broeders getal,” in Veelderhande Liedekens (1566 and succeeding editions).
