Hans van Munstdorp (d. 1573)
Hans van Munstdorp, an Anabaptist martyr, who was burned at the stake at Antwerp, Belgium, in 1573. Van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror gives the date of the execution as September, but according to the Antwerp documents it took place on 17 February. Hans and his wife Janneken were arrested together. Janneken was put to death on 6 October 1573, after she had given birth to a child.
A letter written by Hans to his wife in prison is printed by van Braght (Martyrs Mirror, Dutch 664, English 983 ff.) in which he assured his wife that his intention to stay by the eternal truth was unchanged, he hoped to see her in the everlasting kingdom of God, and encouraged her to be true to the end. "Adieu and farewell, my lamb, my love; adieu and farewell to all that fear God. Adieu and farewell, until the marriage of the Lamb in the New Jerusalem. Be valiant and of good cheer; cast the troubles that assail you upon the Lord, and He will not forsake you. . . . Love God above all; have love and truth; love your salvation, keep your promises to the Lord!"
In the records of Antwerp, P. Génard found a martyr called Hans van Manstrop (Menstrop), who was burned at the stake at Antwerp on 17 February 1573, because he had been rebaptized, and whose goods were confiscated. This martyr is apparently identical with Hans van Munstdorp, and may be the same person as Hans Knevel.
